Highlighting LCAC at the homesteading and green living expo

As a dedicated volunteer for the Land Conservancy of Adams County (LCAC), serving as both the Board Secretary and the Communications Committee Chair, I recently had the pleasure of participating in the Homesteading and Green Living Expo at the Adams County Farmers Market on July 13th. Despite the heat, it was a rewarding experience meeting community members eager to learn about LCAC's mission.

I encountered new residents of Adams County, current LCAC members, and others who enjoyed exploring our map of preserved properties to see if any land in their area was conserved. It was a wonderful opportunity to share information about our work and invite visitors to our upcoming annual summer picnic.

We extend a warm invitation to everyone to attend!

Be sure to mark your calendars for Sunday, September 8 from 4 to 7 pm as we gather at the renowned Hanover Shoe Farms. Known worldwide for its horse breeding, Hanover Shoe Farms spans nearly 3,000 acres, with 750 acres preserved by LCAC and over 1,000 acres under the county's Agland Preservation program!

LCAC will provide delicious Kenny's fried chicken, water, tea, lemonade, tables, and chairs. Guests are encouraged to bring their own plates, cups, silverware, and a dish to share—be it an appetizer, side, or dessert. We will also have a blow-up obstacle course for children of all ages. Please RSVP at https://www.preserveadams.org/summer-picnic.

The picnic is an excellent opportunity to meet LCAC members, board members, staff, and volunteers and to learn more about our mission to preserve the rural lands and character of Adams County. As an accredited, member-supported, 501(c)3 nonprofit, we always welcome new members and support. LCAC operates with two staff members and is governed by a volunteer board of directors.

We encourage you to consider volunteering with us. Opportunities include helping with mailings, events, or serving on a committee. Our committees and their purposes are as follows:

1.     Conservation: To preserve open space and areas of scenic, natural, agricultural, geological, biological, or historic value.

2.     Communications: To promote the work of the Land Conservancy.

3.     Events: To plan and organize the Annual Dinner, Art Auction, Summer Picnic, Road Rally, etc.

4.     Membership: To retain and recruit members.

5.     Planned Giving: To encourage and facilitate legacy gifts to the Land Conservancy.

Our committee volunteers are small but mighty, and we could use more help. As Kaycee Kemper from our Events Committee says, "The LCAC Events Committee is where all the fun begins! I enjoy volunteering on this committee and having a hand in creating fundraising events that help sustain the organization. The Road Rally is my favorite LCAC event!”

Volunteering doesn't require a full-time commitment. Even an hour a month to help and collaborate with a committee will make a significant impact. Please consider joining us. To sign up, visit https://www.preserveadams.org/volunteer.

We look forward to seeing you at the picnic and hopefully working alongside you as a volunteer!

Erica Duffy is secretary of the Land Conservancy board of directors and chair of the Communications Committee.
